Running, Jumping and Momentum: Platformer Movement Tips
Master running jumps, skids, variable jump height and momentum in Mario-style platformers — with concrete numbers from Mario.Game Adventure.

Classic Mario games feel great because movement has weight. You don't just move left and right — you speed up, slow down, skid and fly. Understanding these mechanics turns a frustrating level into a smooth one. Examples use Mario.Game Adventure, whose physics follow the classic model.
Walking vs running
When you walk, the hero accelerates gently to a modest top speed. When you hold run, acceleration is higher and top speed is about 75% faster. In Adventure, walking speed is 1.5 pixels per frame and running speed 2.6.
The difference matters most in the air: horizontal speed is kept during a jump, so a running jump covers nearly twice the distance of a walking one.
Variable jump height
Gravity is lower while you hold jump and the hero is still rising. Let go early and gravity snaps back to normal, cutting the jump short. So:
- Tap for a quick, low hop — ideal under low ceilings or to stomp a nearby enemy.
- Hold for full height — needed for tall pipes and staircases.
Jump power also increases slightly with running speed: a running jump is higher as well as longer.
Air control
You can steer in the air. Pressing the opposite direction in mid-air slows you down — handy when you are about to overshoot a narrow platform.
Skidding
Reverse direction while running on the ground and the hero skids, braking hard before turning around. A quick tap backwards is the fastest way to stop. Skidding at the edge of a platform is how good players stop on a dime.
Momentum management
- Before a long gap, take three or four running steps first. Starting a run right at the edge does not give you enough speed.
- Before a narrow platform, release run in mid-air or tap backwards to avoid sliding off.
- On moving lifts, stand still and let the lift carry you, then jump when the next platform is in range.
Stomp bouncing
Landing on an enemy bounces you up. Hold jump during the bounce for extra height — this lets you reach blocks and ledges otherwise out of range, and chain into another stomp for more points.
Speedrun habits
- Keep holding run for almost the whole level.
- Jump over enemies instead of stopping to stomp them.
- Hit the flag high: jump from the top of the final staircase at full speed.
- Skip optional areas and coins — in Adventure, each second left on the clock is worth 50 points at the end, so speed also boosts your score.
